Dewey Brown Plaza Refresh

Dewey Brown Plaza Refresh

The Dewey Brown Plaza Refresh Is Underway

As you may have seen, the City began refreshing Dewey Brown Plaza in late January. These improvements will enhance the beauty, functionality and overall experience of this beloved public space for the entire community.

Completed Improvements You Can Enjoy Today

Several recent improvements have already been completed:

  • Removal of invasive and overgrown plants and shrubbery,
  • Tree pruning to improve health and visibility,
  • Extension of the paver pattern between the two plazas toward South Avondale Road to create a cohesive look,
  • Installation of new street furniture, and
  • Removal of asphalt around the plazas and resetting of the curb line to align with current street striping

Still to Come: Beautiful landscaping, pollinator-friendly features and stormwater management

The plazas may appear more open than usual. This is intentional. New landscaping will be installed along the northern edge to create a lush vegetative screen that helps reduce traffic noise from North Avondale Road and adds a more park-like feel for the neighborhood south of the plaza.

Additional enhancements will include:

  • New curbing and sidewalk installation, which are currently underway, are expected to be completed by early March,
  • Installation of a bio swale in the eastern plaza to better manage stormwater runoff,
  • New native plantings to support the City’s commitments as a Bee City USA to provide habitat for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
  • Removal of dead cherry trees and replacement with thoughtfully selected new plantings.

Work to Be Completed in Phases: Thank You for Your Patience

The improvements at Dewey Brown Plaza will be completed in phases to ensure the best results. We expect the bioswale installation and a large portion of the new plantings to be finished by May 1 or even sooner. Some plantings may be scheduled for fall to give them the best chance to thrive.

We’re also carefully considering the future of the cherry trees, which are not in the best health, to determine the right timing and replacement options. Plans for a memorial garden are underway and will be created at a later time to provide a meaningful space for reflection.

Thank you for your patience as we work to make the Dewey Brown Plaza a greener, more inviting space for everyone.
