Planning and Zoning Board

Deadline: Friday, September 25 at 5 p.m.

If you would like to have more input on the City’s future growth while also learning more about zoning then the Planning and Zoning Board (PZB) could be the right fit for you. This board has four-year terms and meets the third Monday of most months.

The PZB was created by the City to hear all applications for rezoning and land use permits, as well as make recommendations to the Board of Mayor and Commissioners on any action for such applications. In evaluating the applications, the PZB considers the zoning code and map and takes into account public input and applicable criteria before making a recommendation.

Board of Appeals

Deadline: Friday, October 3 at 5 p.m.

The Board of Appeals meets as necessary to consider variance requests from property owners. Variances allow minor deviations from zoning requirements that regulate how a property may be developed, but only when unique circumstances affecting that particular property are demonstrated. Variance requests before the BOA often include:

  • Exceeding building height maximum
  • Reducing front, side, or rear yard setbacks
  • Reduction of minimum stream buffer requirements
  • Reducing parking requirements

Architectural Review Board and Historic Preservation Commission

Deadline: Friday, October 9, 2020 at 5 p.m.

These two boards operate as one with the Architectural Review Board and Historic Preservation Commission sharing membership and holding meetings back to back once per month. The ARB focuses on the downtown Avondale Estates and residential areas outside of the historic district by reviewing new construction, modifications, and demolition. Since the city’s history is so important, the HPC was created to administer the historic preservation ordinance to ensure that renovations and new construction in the City’s historic district are consistent with the character of the neighborhood. If architecture, history, construction, real estate or landscaping is part of your career – or hobby – this renewable three-year term might be a good fit for you.

Lake Avondale Advisory Board

Deadline: Friday, October 9, 2020 at 5 p.m.

Everyone loves this Avondale crown jewel! And you don’t have to be a hydrology expert to be part of this important group. While members often have expertise in some aspect of the environment, any lake lover is encouraged to apply for a two-year term. The Board reviews the conditions of the lake and its surrounding areas and makes recommendations to the Board of Mayor and Commissioners for lake improvement projects.
