With the rising cases of COVID-19 in Georgia and specifically in DeKalb County, the need to encourage safe practices and behaviors during the pandemic is critical. Governor Brian Kemp, in his most recent executive order is now permitting local governments to adopt and enforce mandates that protect the community from this dreadful virus.

The City of Avondale Estates Board of Mayor and Commissioners will begin enforcing a previously adopted resolution mandating the use of appropriately positioned masks or face shields in all indoor public buildings and outdoor public spaces where at least six-feet of physical distance cannot be maintained. There will be an exception to the social distancing rules for groups that are part of the same family household. Warnings with information about the health risks will be given as necessary, allowing people without masks the opportunity to wear one or leave the area. Refusal can result in civil penalties for the offense. 

Also, consistent with Governor Kemp’s executive order, the owner or tenant of a private businesses must consent to the mandate. The City will be working with local businesses regarding an opt-in program that would provide additional enforcement resources for businesses if needed. Further, the City will not enforce the mask mandate on residential properties.
