[ARCHIVED] Tree Planting for Arbor Day

Happy Arbor Day illustration with dogwood blossoms

In collaboration with the Avondale Estates Garden Club (AEGC), the City will celebrate Georgia's Arbor Day on Friday, Feb. 18 by planting a a native American flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) at 30 Lakeshore Dr. An approved tree on the City’s tree ordinance, the native dogwood is not only beautiful, but will support other species in the ecosystem such as birds and pollinators.

The City is honored to be selected as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 38th year in a row. This program celebrates the importance of an urban tree canopy and the improved care of vital city trees.

AEGC annually donates the cost of the tree to the City in memory of club members or their spouses who have passed away. This year's tree is being planted to remember the following people:

  • Pat Maddox (club member)
  • Elizabeth Wellborn (club member)
  • William Crowell (late husband of club member Mary Crowell)
  • Mark Timberlake (late husband of club member Deborah Timberlake)
  • Bonnie Phelps (club member)

The event starts at 2 p.m. and is open to all who'd like to attend.
