[ARCHIVED] Construction Updates: Paving to Begin Next Week on N. Avondale Road/E. College Avenue

Orange Roadwork Ahead street sign with flag and cone in the road

The North Avondale Road Complete Street Project is moving one step closer to a more walkable, bikeable and safe main street. One major item remaining on the project’s checklist, final road construction including paving, milling and striping, is slated to begin work on Monday, Nov. 17.

By Sunday, Nov. 16, DeKalb County Watershed Management will have completed all work in the roadway from Sams Crossing to Ashton Place on their College Avenue Water Main Replacement Project, allowing the City’s contractors to begin milling and paving E. College Avenue and North Avondale Road. Work will begin on Monday, Nov. 17, from Sams Crossing to Ashton Place. Crews will work during the day from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Temperatures must remain above 40 degrees for the work to occur.

The road work will include:

  1. Milling – Crews grind up or mill the old asphalt, removing the top layer to create a smooth, level surface for paving.
  2. Paving – A new layer of asphalt is laid and compacted.
  3. Striping – The road is painted to identify lanes, parking spaces and other markings.
  4. Installation of center medians with landscaping to enhance safety and provide visual appeal

Schedule of remaining roadwork (weather permitting):

  • Nov. 17-26: milling, paving and temporary striping
  • Nov. 26-30: work ends on Wednesday at noon for Thanksgiving break
  • Dec. 1-19: center medians are installed and landscaped, final permanent striping installed

Work will begin at Sams Crossing and head east toward Ashton Street. One lane of traffic will remain open in both directions from Sams Crossing to City Hall during resurfacing work. When work is occurring in front of Ashton Place, where there are only two lanes of traffic, flaggers will direct vehicles through any delays. Expect delays and flaggers throughout the corridor to assist with traffic while crews are working.

Other items to note:

  • Barrels will shift as needed to route traffic.
  • Starting Sunday, Nov. 16, parallel parking will be closed along the corridor during milling and paving.
  • Milling and paving will also occur up to 30 feet on side streets along the corridor.
  • Driveways and entrances could be closed up to 30 minutes during milling and up to two hours during paving.

The remaining light poles will be installed and operational by the second week of December. Trees and landscaping will start to be installed in the next few weeks as well. The project remains on track, with final punch list items to be completed in January 2026.

Upcoming Residential Paving of Chatsworth Drive and Majestic Circle

Paving is scheduled for Chatsworth Drive and Majestic Circle from Nottingham Drive to Wiltshire Drive immediately after paving has been completed on the North Avondale Complete Street Project. A paving assessment completed in 2021 by engineering firm CPL listed these locations as a priority for routine milling and paving maintenance, totaling 0.89 miles of milling and paving throughout the residential area. Residents on affected streets will receive notification prior to the start of work. Streets will remain open during resurfacing work; however, vehicles will not be allowed to park in the roadway. Expect minor delays accessing the streets while crews are working.

Update on College Avenue Water Main Replacement Project

By Sunday, Nov. 16, DeKalb County Watershed Management will have completed all work in the roadway from Sams Crossing to Ashton Place on their College Avenue Water Main Replacement Project, and will be working on completing the remaining work outside the roadway. Additionally, they will be focusing their work east of Ashton Place to Memorial Drive. Night work will continue on the water main replacement, but the entire project is expected to be completed by December 24.
